Drone Mapping

Drones are one of the great technological success stories of the 21st century so far, with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) now used for a range of commercial applications. Whether it’s roof inspections or television filming, the phenomenal rise in drone usage has led to the development of ever more sophisticated software, among which is 3D mapping software.

The demand for high quality aerial data capture from UAVs is growing fast. REAMS’ UAV technology removes the guesswork when it comes to judging a range of data and can potentially help save time and money on your surveying project.

Drone mapping has HUGE potential for a number of sectors including construction, agriculture, mining, infrastructure inspection and real estate. Having a clear, accurate photograph or 3D model of your project area, complete with measurements, is advantageous in terms of future decision-making and budget planning.

Photogrammetry

Drone mapping uses a technique called Photogrammetry, which is the science of making measurements from photographs. The output of this is normally a map, measurement or 3D model. Many of the maps we use today (Google Maps) are created using photogrammetry, but with images taken from aircraft.

Using a drone instead of an aircraft has many benefits, the main beneficial difference being the low altitude at which a UAV can fly, therefore capturing higher quality and more accurate images.

Capturing the data with a drone

REAMS deploys UAVs, with a camera mounted underneath, to capture thousands of overlapping images of the area or site. They’re captured as the UAV flies autonomously along a pre-specified flight path ensuring data is captured accurately.

In order to produce 3D outputs, REAMS will fly a “double grid” flight plan with the camera tilted slightly down in order to capture greater detail of vertical surfaces. These images will be supplemented with an orbit of the subject as well as any additional image that may help.

Processing the images

Now this is the hard bit. If it was possible to do this manually, the process could take years of painstakingly stitching and adjusting the images, so they fit together and give a true orthographic view. Fortunately, computers can do that for us!

The software enables us to put together a comprehensive survey of land, buildings and infrastructure easily, presenting it in a variety of easy to manage formats for clients. The best feature is the ability to take accurate measurements of length, area and volume straight from the maps, so clients are able to manage their building or site, without having to actually be there.
